How To Be Frugal

Denver – Good morning, everybody! I hope you have been doing well. One day last week, I was outside, skateboarding to my heart’s delight. Then the next day, I was ice-skating down the street. And then the day after that, I was water-skiing down the street!

And! Plus! Tomorrow, I intend to climb to the summit of Mt. Everest – on a giraffe!

GOOD TIMES! GREAT VIBRATIONS!

HaHa!

Anyway .. the girls and I went to dinner last night – at Costco – and I got to thinking about how people can save money during these financially difficult times. I mean, in between bites of a jam-covered cracker served by somebody’s Granny wearing a sketchy hairnet on aisle 32, I thought the issue of frugality would be good to blog about.

Being frugal means to be smart about your money. Being cheap, on the other hand, means to eat at Taco Bell – I do not advocate that at all! Being frugal means to eat samples of food at Costco several times a day.

Aigh’t?

So, without further ado, I present you Paotie’s Top Nine Ways to be Frugal:

~~ .. ~~ .. ~~ .. ~~ .. ~~

9. Carpool – Carpooling is a tradition first began by the Flintstones and continues to serve modern times quite well. Rather than drive to work commando-style, invite your friends, family and/or neighbors to carpool: besides saving the environment and money, you can actually avoid Taco Bell on the way to work.

8. Trim/Shave/Wax Your Way to Frugality – The girls and I compromised on the types of razor blades we used (I used manly men’s razors; the girls used pink stuff, man), and now we buy far less expensive razors, creams and so on. Or, you could go one-step further and become a hairy hippie until the spring – and save money!

7. Downgrade/Eliminate Unnecessary Expenses – This is a painful method of reducing your expenses. For example, I have been severely depressed for the last two weeks because we no longer have 500 satellite channels – we now have 37. By reducing your satellite (or other entertainment) packages, you can save money on batteries: the girls have been fantabulously happy about the end of my non-stop channel changing sessions.

6. Reuse, Recycle, Reissue – I have been using the same razor blade to shave my face for the last month and a half, and while I look like an unshaven, stoned Chinaman, the razor burn became surprisingly easy to get used to. At first, people were like, “Is that a rash on your face?” and then later, questions began to include things like, “Dude?! Did you wreck your scooter and fall on your face?!”

  • Recycle Christmas cards

5. Do not shop or buy online – There is one major exception to this but before I get to that: buying stuff online is addictively easy to do – by forcing yourself to NOT BUY STUFF ONLINE, you save money. Really! The exception? Paotie’s Store. BUY! BUY! BUY! HaHa! (I’m kinda kidding, ‘kay?)

4. Reduce Household Expenses – Reducing your heating costs is one way to increase your savings: in our house, I turned the thermostat down to 50 degrees – 24 hours a day – and we saved money. For about a week, I mean, and then the girls complained and complained that the house was “too cold” and that it “takes too long to get warm!” GEESH! Also, make sure your ceiling fans are working in the right direction; turn off unneeded lights at night;  take super-fast showers; and open curtains during the day to let the sun warm your house – by doing these things, you will save money.

3. ‘Scuse Me .. Do You Have Any Grey Coupons? Using coupons is a great way to save money: look for them in newspapers, junk mail and even online. Many places, including restaurants, tire retailers and even drug dealers, are now issuing coupons online – you can print and take ‘em with you. Click on this link to learn more about rebates and how to use them. Click the following for more information:

2. Pay With Cash – I’ve long had a philosophy of “If I do not have the money, I do not buy it” that has served me pretty well. I paid off my credit card in August and no longer use credit cards for the smallest of purchases. We’ve even gone so far as to only use money orders when paying large bills, mostly because I do not like seeing those thin envelopes from the banks in my mailbox that yell, “OVERDRAWN! YOU ARE OVERDRAWN! BAD PERSON ALERT!”

1. Prioritize – Deciding what you really need and want can be difficult to do, but it has to be done. We reduced our satellite programming, renewed our library subscriptions and have adjusted (somewhat) to life without 500 channels to watch on HDTV. We have also scrapped the checkbook in favor of money orders because I hate receiving mail from the bank. We are moving into a smaller home in part because we wanted to save more money rather than staying at our current house, which is too big and is too expensive to heat in the Colorado winters. And while the girls have been taking the buses to school, I have continued to ride my scooter – because I am a hard-core biker!

“Mmm .. ‘kay.” you say?

I know!

I feel the same way!

Well, if you know of a great and safe way to save money, please let me know and maybe I’ll update the article to include a few more pointers – if I get enough of ‘em. We can all save a little money, gain new friends, and make the world a little better – by eating dinner at the food sampling stations at Costco.

GOOD TIMES! GREAT VIBRATIONS!

UPDATE: Green Couch readers left additional comments last night – check ‘em out below:

See you later, gators ..

Another suggestion…

Start sewing or knitting. If a tear in the elbow of shirts, stitch them up instead of throwing them away. If missing a button, look at the bottom seam of the shirt (the additional buttons are usually added to the shirts), sew on buttons. Go to Goodwill or Salvation Army…you’d be surprised to find how many nice clothes of recently deceased people are donated to these kind of 2nd/3rd hand stores. Hmmm… ask Whole Foods store where they get rid of their “expired” shelf foods so that you’d go to the place to pick them up for FREE.

;o)

Also… (just sharing my experiences)… hunt churches’ pantries. *wince*, they give away a LOT of starches/carbs (white kind… they would be given goods from bakeries which they’d freeze and when people show up, they’d give the frozen goods. You don’t have to prove that you are a Christian or anything like that.) I use Angel Food’s Ministries occasionally, depending on what they are selling on a monthly basis (warning… none of foods are organic.)

Now you have a better idea of how my family lives… frugally, yup.

Karen Mayes

Karen ..

Great suggestions! We actually started buying more organic food at Costco rather than at Wholefoods and that’s a great idea – I’ll update the article later to include your suggestions of organic foods and thrift stores.

Cool beans!

That’s nice. We use the energy smart light bulbs which is made from General Electric. It will last for approx. 6 years, life: 10,000 hours.

Just stop by Paotie’s store…..found the t-shirt which is made in the USA. It’s supposed to be more cheaper than the “made in other countries.”

May I suggest if you let me…..I suggest to the Paotie’s store to use “Paotie’s Pinky Pals”, the three P’s. ;-)

White Ghost

White Ghost ..

Great idea about the lights! I looked up a site for tips on how to save money with lights and found this one.

Took my family to Chili’s for some great eats. Does that count?

Wow! Awesome. I try to be frugal, I’ve done some of the stuffs above and I used to cut coupons but who has time for that? I guess cutting back on computer time and increasing available time for cutting coupon is one way to do it.

Like Karen said, many communities have free clothing day where people drop off clothes they do not need and people pick out clothes they need, usually they’re in a church. I have not done that. I’ve done the goodwill bit, but they have increased the prices so much over the years (dumb.)

I plan my meals around sales at the grocery store. I rarely buy anything at a retail price at any stores. Wait and usually it’ll go on sale soon. :) I buy generic equivalence for some personal stuffs like body wash, shampoos, etc., check out the ingredients and compare them, if they’re the same and in the same order, then you know they’re not any different except for fragrance.

And, lastly…Paotie…this one is for you. Since you do not have satellite channels anymore, go to http://www.DTV2009.gov and apply online to get two 40 dollar coupon for a DTV converter box. Converter box retails anywhere between 40 to 70 bucks. What it does is converts analog to digital but..a friend of mine has a brand new digital TV and lives out in the rural area and she opted out of cable due to high costs. She tells me that this converter box enables her to get way lot more channels (200 or so) than she would if she had used an antenna.

You should do more of these frugal articles, especially in times like these.

I am working on a way to reduce my cable/internet to $9.99 a month without sacrificing anything.

(Slingbox…piggy backing on parents’ connection…bit torrents….but have to read my ISP’s agreement on excessive downloads :-) )

Will update if I am successful…

Mmm .. ‘kay!

So far we’ve got:

1) Recycle clothes/buy from thrift stores (Karen Mayes)
2) Petition Government to bailout White Ghost for insurance purposes
3) Use more efficient light bulbs (White Ghost)
4) Eat at Chili’s (McConnell) (Hey! It beats Taco Bell ANYTIME!)
5) Piggyback Internet from parents (JJ)
6) Digital converters (Candy)

LOL

With a rebel yell, she cried, “MORE! MORE! MORE!”

HIya, Happy New Year y’all!

Well, frugal also means DIY remodeling rather going the $$$ contractor and home equity loan route. That’s what we’re doing here to keep an ol’, ol’ house going. We’re saving on cable TV bills, period, because if you’re remodeling during hours after work, that means no time for TV, heh.

Yup, still stripping ol’ paint off 80+ year-old window, door, and baseboard (at floors) trim. Remodeled the fireplace, hearth, cabinet work and re-sanded, refinished wood floor in the living room so far– amazing what you can do in your spare hours if you can live without the boobtube. Plus, after all that physical exertion, we sleep soundly til the alarm clock goes off.

But, after all the paint strippin’ is done on the house, I ain’t nevah gonna touch another paint stripping job for the rest of my life.

Ahh, so you were able to put colors in your comments!! No fair! I’m gonna go talk with these folks over at WP.com! ;)

Happy New Year!!

HNY to ya’all…

Very fine suggestions, Paotie.

The “pay with cash” mentality has carried me through many a dry spell.
Another good (and healthy) way to save $$ is to stop paying for gym memberships! If you live in a nice climate like I do, there’s no reason why you can’t bike, or run, or walk outside! I love gyms, but I love saving money more.

Happy New Year to you too!

Heidi ..

Great suggestion – but what about people who live in the cold parts of the country? What would they do?

Join Jazzercise?

Ehhh.
