Barack Obama Wins 2008 Presidential Election!

Denver – Good evening, everybody! Senator Barack Obama is now the 44th President of the United States after John McCain conceded the election earlier tonight! For the first time in American history, an African American is president of the United States.

Wow!

I am .. speechless! Actually, the reason why I am speechless is because of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s statement in which she says:

“This was a long and hard fought campaign but the result was well worth the wait. Together, under the leadership of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and a Democratic Congress, we will chart a better course to build a new economy and rebuild our leadership in the world.”

Right.

What do you think about this election and President-Elect Barack Obama?

Anyway, congratulations to the Democratic Party and Barack Obama.

:)

First off, Whoo! It’s Awesome, what can I say?!

*Exhaling Deep Breath*

I guess, the rest is faith that our Country will persevere>

You mean Obama will be the 44th president at the inauguration in January. Don’t get ahead of yourself. Bush still got his term to finish this year, uh-huh.

I sure hope the stockmarket brightens up with this news.

OTOH I’m glad this election hype is finally over with, and the country can get back to business.

And yup, America can finally put its rascist history dating to the Civil War behind and move forward. Equality has a new significance.

Ann_C

Ann ..

You are correct. Mr. Bush all but disappeared so, yah .. I got ahead of myself.

Thank you.

Wow! Historic times!

Hey! McConnell did a great job advocating for McCain/Palin. What a trooper he was, unflappable as usual.

Paotie

Oh That was beautiful……

Welcome to the Diversity! Abraham Lincoln is from Illinois and he would have been very proud of Obama……

Abraham Lincoln took a huge risk for freeing the slaves.

The history here in USA just got an exclamation!

Wondering how the world can see in USA…..I find it interesting because when Margaret Thatcher was the first woman to become Prime Minister of England. And also, England was the first country in Europe to have a woman as a Prime Minister. I don’t think the world did not pay any attention to this woman…..

People all over the world tend to watch on USA……

White Ghost

What a great symbolic time… I am sure none of the founding fathers (I could be wrong) never thought there would be an American African president.

In a way I think it is cool because it forces us to accept diversity more :o )

Karen Mayes

OOOPPPPS! on Nov 4th at 11:40 PM……

I meant to say that “I don’t think the world did pay any attention to this woman……”

I must have gotten an emotional with all the history’s exclamation!

White Ghost

I’m a bit disappointed.

I knew that no matter who got into office that we were going to be in trouble but I think there is going to be even more trouble with the decision that America made yesterday.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/167582

Fascinating article to read. And check out the comments as well (ouch at the high school teacher’s comment :o ( )

Well, time will tell. I am thinking… I only hope that people would be patient with Obama and he enters the Oval Office to find a big mess to clean up… cleaning up takes a while and people nowadays have a short patience. McCain would still have inherited the big mess if Obama did not win, so it does not matter.

Karen Mayes

Karen..Interesting comments in there…..

The democrats DO have control of Congress, which means Obama is NOT going to be a lame duck president. This is good news for Obama, IMO.

After watching his speech last night, I realized that I made the right choice to vote him after all! It’s unbelievable knowing that he is the first black president of US after 43rd time, woo hoo.

I gotta ask.. you said “African-American”, I personally cannot stand that word. He was born in America so therefore he is an American like us, nothing more or less. Anyone who moved here from Africa then I guess you can say they are African-Americans, the same with anyone who moved here from France, they’d be called French-Americans and forth.

Obama is just simply an american like us, why shouldn’t we (whites) be called British-Americans? :-)

But anyways… I look forward to 20th of Jan!!

-SG

I have not read newsweek yet, Karen….

Candy….wait a min, girl……we need to wait for the new republican leaders on both sides (senate and representative — Majority and Minority leaders)

So far there are several seats that are undecided (close call) for now…..

Have to wait until everything in the seats are all verified.

We will see what happens…….

White Ghost

Beam me up, Scotty.

You can learn how to use it…..Beam us up, Paotie’s Pinky Fans.

White Ghost

WG,

The democrats have the Majority of the House, that’s for sure!

But, with Senate, I’m certain they will have majority..I know, I know…I need to hold my pants on!

Here’s what’s happening: Dems have 39 for sure, 17 projected more likely and then….Reps have 26 for sure and 14 projected more likely with 4 up in the air. Say, we give 4 to Reps they will have 54 and then Dems will have 56. Ergo, my reasoning for thinking that Dems have the Majority of the Senate.

But, you’re right, the counts have not been completed….ok I’m holding on to my pants, I promise I won’t let it fall down, just yet!

:)

And, 60 is THE magic number to avoid filibusters.

Hi all, I was absolutely positively THRILLLLLLLLLEEEEDDDDD with the election results, especially seeing over 100 million people get out to vote! Whoo hoo! America has done us proud! Democrats have the majority in Congress, and thats a good thing with regard to the new appointees to the various Govt branches and Commissions, i.e., FCC. Can’t wait!!! All eyes on Obama as he picks his Cabinet, most important for obvious reasons is the Treasury Secretary.

Seek Geo, African-American, its an identity thing. Deaf Americans, etc etc.

Dancing on my desk for Obama!

Sheri A. Farinha

Me Too Sheri! He was absolutely the best choice in this election and I’m so glad most others agreed with me. I have to say I thought his speech was brilliant the other night. I was also impressed with McCain’s concession speech. I liked McCain, but not as much as Obama. I couldn’t stand Palin, but could have tolerated McCain without her. I really think if not for Palin, he might have won the election. But he made a poor choice and that made me wonder what other poor choices he might have made in the oval office. So I feel the right man we voted the right one in now. Those who are upset need to look forward and quit whining.

I am once again proud to be an American living abroad, Bush really made my life hell. It’s like breathing different air now. OUR country made an excellent choice and everyone feels it…exhilarating time for me…Watching the celebrations from the outside was painful, I would have loved to have been there to live it in person. U*S*A….U*S*A

jodi

I have *always* been proud of my country. Freedom has never been free and sacrifices were made in order to ensure we have that freedom. But many take advantage of that freedom by abusing it.

Kim, Palin was the single reason for galvanizing the conservative base to McCain’s side. Not many conservative Republicans liked McCain but when he picked Palin everything went McCain’s way until the bailout began. Again, Palin HELPED McCain gain the constituency base and made it more than palatable to vote for McCain. McCain has never been a conservative Republican but always a RINO.

Also, Obama will soon require youths to young adults (middle school all the way up to college) that they perform mandatory community service.
http://kokonutpundits.blogspot.com/2008/11/obamas-new-youth-corp-requirement.html

Even when he pledged to boost the size of the military. His new “Civilian National Security Force” would rival the annual budget of our military defense.

Where will Obama get that money? Taxing the rich won’t work. The top 5% pay for 60% of all income taxes. Plus the top 5% combined income amounts to about $3 trillion dollars which is, ironically, the same budgeted amount for our Federal Govt. Where will the money come from?

You guys. The middle class people. Clinton promised the same thing back in 1992. What did he do? Increased income tax on the middle class.

It’s coming and we’ll know that Obama lied thru his teeth when he said tax cuts to 95% of the working family/class.

Kim, I fully agree! McCain’s speech was very good. Sorry Mike, but I agree that Palin was a bad choice. Had McCain had a more experienced running mate, it would have been tougher for American’s to decide. As it is, no one wanted Palin to be whom ends up running our Country should something have happened to McCain.

As for Obama’s plan. Look, every politician makes promises they can’t keep – some they do some they don’t. Fact is, it wouldn’t matter who won, its gonna be challenging – the economy is getting worse day by day. I just got an email today about all the stores that are closing or downsizing! Oh my! Where am I gonna do my Christmas shopping??? I just hope the place where I get my nails done stays open! God forbid should that close!
Will look for that message and share.

TGIF!

Sheri A. Farinha

____________

Hate to say this but we seem to be moving from a “recession” that we are now in, to another depression era.

This all happened under a Republican administration in just 8 years. Lets see what Obama can do to help revive our country. Its gonna take all of us, not just the President to turn this around.

Sheri A. Farinha

For those of you who are not aware of it, here’s the Blueprint for Change.

I actually think that making kids do community service is a good thing, considering how spoiled and demanding most kids are these days.

Yeah, let them kids learn to give rather than take.

As for Palin, I think in the beginning, she sounded like a good choice. But, as time went on, a lot of people didn’t like what they saw. I just saw comments at one site where many said they are Republicans and decided to vote for Obama because they didn’t like Palin.

In my town, which is predominately Republican…Obama won. In my state, Obama flipped 33 counties! Very defining.

Income Tax Increasing on Upper Middle Class…..let’s hope not…..Use money to save in the mutual funds for the colleges.

We’ll see…..

I had a good conversation with my hearing friend the other day. We were discussing about having a deaf USA President years from now. We are expecting that the deaf USA President would be an oralist. We agreed about this.

White Ghost

Sheri, you simply do not understand what conservative Republicans wanted and that was to see an elected conservative Republican. McCain was never a conservative Republican but a RINO (Republican in Name Only) which was why so many people supported McCain only because he picked Palin who represented that raw conservative Republican ideology. This has been discussed in the conservative Republican circles over the last few months. And it’s ironic and very presumptious of you to call out on Palin’s so-called “inexperience” when Obama has no mililtary experience, no foreign policy experience, no executive experience, a junior Senator for 3 years of which he only worked 150 days prior to running for president and that the vice president of the opposing party with more political experience who happens to be a woman and Governor of Alaska. Your stab at Governor Palin’s “inexperience” belies your own ignorance the stark contrast on Obama’s own lack of experience that’s less than Palin!! The irony is rich when you voted for a guy with less experience than the vice president of the opposing political party!!!

And, oh, people should worry a lot less about getting their fingernails done if stores are downsizing or closing because those people who work there won’t have a job or the money to buy Christmas gifts.

Candy, community service should be a volunteer effort and not something you force on people unless they actually committed a crime and that the judge orders the accused 100 hours of community service. No one should be forced to do community service. In fact, the Constitution forbids involuntary servitude:

Amendment XIII
Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

And Obama wants to force American citizens to do community service? That’s a Marxist/Communist ideology right there.

WG,

That would be me.

:P

I’d make sure that those born deaf or before they are born get the modified stem cells for their cochleas using their own stem cells to ensure that they are born hearing. This would save money for U.S. tax payers. And that Gallaudet University shuts down saving tax payers $110 million dollars a year.

:)

Mike,

I’m thinking more along the lines that are pretty common in many universities – community service requirement in order to graduate. Almost all majors have it, and it is to promote the ideology of voluntary service to the community, yet, it is a requirement to graduate.

Something along that line for kids in high school and even middle school wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Remember how Clinton was raving about his Americorps, and it turned out to be nothing spectacular. I agree, the constitution does provide protections, but, to teach and encourage kids to give back to the community isn’t a bad thing, actually and it’s the same as “serving your country” by enlisting in the military…You can think of it this way…and, since not everyone wants to enlist, this might be another way of serving one’s country.

LOL Mike, you know we’d vote for you if you ran. :)

Um, candy, that’s fine if you VOLUNTEER for it rather than getting drafted into on fulfilling a community service requirement. The U.S. military is an all-volunteer military force. The draft was banned over 30 years ago. I’m all for community service as an option for student to volunteer their time and earn credits if they want. But to force each and every student that they MUST perform community service is simply wrong. Even judges dole out hours of community service as a punishment to those who broke the law.

Now, if people say that forcing others to do community service is fine then re-instituting the draft should be even more dandy which force those to serve their country.

White Ghost…THAT was cute.
Mac: Despite the fact that you were an avid McCain supporter, I would so vote for you- it’s ALL about the Go-T *smile* and the fact that you cc.
Palin was not a good choice at least for me, but McCain never had my vote to begin with…

jodi

If Gally University shuns the $110 M, then, Jaime Berke just announced in her blog that those 1K students enrolling that just decreased.

Gally University paid a huge price, isn’t it? You can poke of me all you want ’cause I’m one of Gally Alumni!

Bush’s dog, Barney just bit a reporter few days ago….he ended up getting a tetnus shot!

White Ghost

Jodi, I was a “supporter” of McCain, not an avid supporter. I supported him only because he picked a true conservative Republican to be his running mate. That is what galvanized most of the conservative Republican base to McCain’s side. McCain has NEVER been a conservative Republican. He’s called a RINO. Do you know what that means, Jodi? Ever hear of McCain’s program allowing illegals more benefits in the United States that we conservative Republicans affectionally called “Shamnesty” even though McCain denied vigorously his wasn’t an amnesty program for illegals? He wasn’t quite so big on oil (well, bigger support on oil than Obama’s). And he actually believes in global warming that CO2 was the cause of it all and that it was human-induced (full bs!)? And that he’s, too, want a cap and trade on carbon credits?
We voted for the McCain-Palin ticket only because it would give Palin a shot at the presidency in 4 or 8 years time by running for it. I wouldn’t have voted for McCain had he not picked Palin. She knows about energy. She knows about govt reform. She knows about budgeting and knows how to balance her own state budget and is enjoying a massive surplus. She knows about dealing with the big boys and the corruption that she able to deal with them and get them out of her state government. That’s why she has the highest approval rating of any governors in the United States from the 80s to low 90s.

She has, in every sense of the word, the qualification to be vice president. Anybody who says “No” need to, laughably so, seriously look at Obama’s even less experience than Palin’s for his “qualifications” to be President.

A lot of conservative Republicans resisted Palin only either because their were sexist, misogynist, biased, or didn’t like that the fact that she is a mother with 5 kids and would have to care for 3 of them while as a veep thinking she would not “handle” the workload. Hello!! She’s a governor!

WG,

I’m a Gally alumni, too. Or haven’t you noticed that in my Kokonut Pundit blog over the last 4+ years?

:P

“Rosa Parks sat, so Martin Luther King Jr. could stand, so Barack Obama could run, so America could fly!”………….

YES HE DID IT………………..

xoxoxox Leslie

Nice try, Mike…..Jaime Berke got it first. It was on October 4th.

Here it is:

http://berkeoutspoken.blogspot.com/2008/10/gallaudets-enrollment-drops-below-1000.html

I have visited your blog….not the recent blog….my bookmarks came into late……I’ll have to fix, fix, fix to make it heal.

White Ghost

Geez louise Mike! You of all people who is probably one of the most sarcastic people I know, get pissy at other deafies when they don’t understand your sarcasm. Surprised when you don’t pick up when other people are being sarcastic. I was joking re the nail place and christmas shopping. Maybe there should be a Mike McConnel sarcasm icon made so we can use it like we do smileys? Doesn’t matter, you are so pissed about Obama winning nothing we say is going to matter to you because from your view, you feel strongly about certain things. You are right about one thing, I don’t understand how Republicans think right now, conservative or otherwise. From my view, the GOP failed. Even the news has reported that the GOP has come out stating this too. And for the rest of the stuff you said about Obama, I simply don’t agree with what you said. What’s the point continuing to complain about Obama vs. McCain anyway, last I checked, the elections are over.

Peace out.

Sheri A. Farinha

I agree with most people here that Sarah Palin was a BAAAD pick. For the past eight years, our country has been deeply divided and disliked by foreigners. I lived through it. Let me tell you my experiences as someone who has been traveling abroad frequently -

On my first trip to France, I was treated like a crap as an American in Paris. Cashiers were unbelievably rude. I was in a store, and I asked a cashier how much the item cost, and she yelled at me as a mean witch. Other students in the group were treated in the same way.

On my second trip to France, my French host families talked nothing but how dirty and selfish Americans are. The weather was so freakin’ hot that they jokingly blamed on me for causing the global warming and allowing big fat cars to pollute in US.

Last summer, when I was in Rome, I experienced a massive riot depicting hatred towards Bush who happened to be in Rome on that day to meet the pope. Almost all streets in Rome were blocked. Gas poured everywhere. There were screams. There were posters saying “Push Bush Out!” Read the whole story here – http://www.filmmakersdream.net/travel/?p=78

When I was in Florence, a waiter at a restaurant was nasty as hell. Two of the students ordered a piece of meat, and they both got undercooked meat. They requested nicely to cook the meat some more. The waiter refused. We asked for a bottle of water. He never gave us a bottle of water. We still paid, but we didn’t give a tip. The minute we stepped out, the waiter chased after us and yelled at us to give him a tip. We stood up and said, “No!”

Last December, the work camp leader treated me obnoxiously because I was American. She said something along the lines that I was just a spoiled American who has housekeepers…

This trip has been different…Europeans advocated by asking us to vote for Obama – my French friends and host families asked me if I was voting for Obama.

Yesterday, when I walked down the road, a French residence saw my shirt and said, “You’re for Obama?”

“Yup!” I responded. She gave me thumbs up, “I hope he wins. All French people are hoping that he wins!”

Today, I was at a bookstore. As I was purchasing a book written in English, the cashier asked me if I’m American. I told him “Oui!” He smiled and said, “France is very happy that Obama won!”

Yesterday, I was in Aix-en-Provence, a big city in Provence, and there were big huge posters celebrating Obama’s victory.

It’s great to feel that there is a sense of pride in being an American in Europe for the first time, something that I’ve never felt being on a foreign land…

Also, as someone who lives in the south, I have many friends who are Republicans and many of them voted for Obama. This goes in showing that Obama was someone who could bring the divided nation together. If McCain-Palin won, we would have continued to see a deeply divided nation because Palin is way too conservative for Democrats who would not be able to handle at all, and even moderate Republicans could not handle her. Thus, that left only to the very conservatives who liked Palin. Our country is a melting pot. Our country is filled with many different opinions, and we can’t expect everyone to be conservative.

While Obama is Democrat, I feel that he is someone who is willing to listen to others and is willing to make compromises. He’s also honest as he made comments saying that he was sorry to make certain mistakes. He may have a few opinions that I may not agree, but no politician have the same mind as I do.

Mike, for your comment regarding global warming – my advice is to go to Europe. I didn’t understand the concept of global warming too well until I came to Europe, and it was a life changing experience for me as I SAW THE FACT that the humans ARE causing it!

Rachel, you go girl! Your experiences seem awesome. Tis true, worldwide, many countries are thrilled about Obama as our next President. All except for the Iranians perhaps :) . And, man, you realize you just set yourself up for more lectures from Mike about why you are wrong and he is right?

Be NICE Mike! Rachel is one of my favorite bloggers!

Sheri A. Farinha

Well, I have to chuckle, this country has gone thru Democratic and Republican administrations like the laundry, blue or red bleed. A lot of what happens near election time is that Americans finally get around to re-assessing their government and political leaders every four years.

“Oh, geez, almost 4 years already and about election time already?!”

I’ll wager most Americans don’t think a whole lot about politics until that time. Walk into my in-law’s house on a family Sunday evening and it’s ALWAYS politics, LOL. Sometimes it gets so I wanna scream, shut up, this is Sunday after all.

*like, gimme a break*

Ann_C

*Grin* Rachel, you just sound like my brother… when he toured Europe, Asia, and Middle East 20 years ago. Anti-American emotions expressed by people who live there got so bad to a point that he lied about his nationality, saying he was from Canada and that he rooted for Blue Jays baseball team.

He realized it was all media manipulation.

Karen Mayes

Karen,

I can understand how your brother felt. Fortunately, I have a dual citizenship, American-Canadian, which means that I can say that I’m Canadian, if I needed too! LOL!

Karen –

I understand what your brother went through……it sounds like there is no change over the years.

I wonder if the 70′s have effected them into the anti-americanism…..due to the foreign policy that needs to be conservative.

Around the world expects Obama to recognize the foreign policy that will change, however, the 9/11 attack have effected to all of us and get the foreign policy to protect the boundary lines.

We know that USA have received the bomb threats several times around the world. Of course, USA got the bomb at the embassies. That is the huge problem nowadays.

White Ghost

Let’s see… McConnell days that Obama has ZERO experience and no leadership qualities… but let’s see…

* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience.

* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive… and maybe even the President of the United States!!

Thankfully, we elected “Barack HUSSEIN Obama!”

netrox

netrox,

You hit the spot! It’s certainly obvious that Obama is very qualified!

Paotie,

Ain’t that strange we just got rid of “Red” then today at the meeting of G-20, China may help us with 586 billion dollars bailout with many strings attached such as “Hey USA, drop the arms sale to Taiwan!”.
