Deafness: Cures On The Horizon?

Denver – Once again, everybody! I told you it was a slow day! But, I have good news! Well, for most of you, anyway. Word comes from McConnell that a possible cure for deafness is on the horizon. McConnell gets down and dirty in the details of a published report.

Meanwhile, msnbc.com published a report indicating that the elderly are increasingly turning to cochlear implants to restore their hearing. With the aging baby boomer population set to .. continue to .. accumulate birthday candles, cochlear implants seem to be another medical solution to deafness.

Perhaps one day, deafness will be obsolete? Or rare? Or common? (Hey! Just for goodness’ sakes! It IS a slow day!)

Pondering pancakes, I am.

See you later, gators ..

LOL yeah one day we all will have the option to hear or choose not to hear!

I have read up a lot about Atoh1, in fact, I believe I did blog about it once. From what I understand, real cure is maybe about 20 years away or so (hopefully soon!)

I believe, and that is just my view, that not all deaf/hoh people will take advantage of it. I believe that the majority will. I believe that deaf culture will be a very very small one. Which is kind of scary for those who refuse the cure because services might be reduced in light of the fact that a cure is available. That is, unless the cure is not for everyone. We don’t know, at this point.

But, I definitely will go for it if it will work for me. It’s a no brainer! But, come to think of it, many deaf will have to go through intensive AVT training to be able to understand and use speech.

And, for Seniors who opt for C.I., yeah, makes sense. Hey, if they need a hip replacement, why not get an ear replacement while they’re at it!

I like your slow day posts! :)

Candy ..

Yup! At least the technology will improve and perhaps one day, the implants/devices will not be so invasive. Mac’s article on the hair cells is interesting, too.

Slow days are okay, actually. It is nice to be bored for once.

Me getting the CI when I become a senior citizen? I’d be lazy. Enuff for me dealing with Speech Therapists for 15 years. No thanks.

Too much work when I was ‘ung.

Golly, I’ve been deaf all my life, I don’t know how I’d act if I opted for stem cell implants and they succeeded…some sounds I may like, like the nightingale songs or cicada wings’ beating, but not others… like fartin’ Buddhas in a bathtub? :P
