New Deaf Aggregator Coming Soon

Denver – Good evening, everybody! I am sorry I am late to posting tonight – Squirrels that Run Up the Tree have been shooting pretzels of iron logic at my house! They are outraged! They are appalled! And they are protesting because I am affiliated with Verizon Wireless – I sold Rachel some cool stuff and got “bonus points” to fly to Hawaii!!

I am not kidding you!

HaHa!

I’m just messin’ with all ya’ll. Can ya dig it, ya’know what I’m sayin’?

Anyway, I want to briefly talk about DeafRead and Rachel. DeafRead banned Rachel because an Editor there is prejudiced against people with cochlear implants, English and Peru. Well, maybe that’s not true – the Editor is also using DeafRead in accordance to Sprint Relay’s political ideals and values, especially towards the DBC, Deafhood, and Peru.

I am not finding fault with DeafRead at all – I am just stating the facts. Most articles appearing on DeafRead are selectively screened before being published and there’s no disputing that fact.

I also know from experience that some Editors think too highly of themselves, as if they were able to exert influence over the way I published my articles. Twice, Editors have demanded I change a word in an article; and a couple other times, a picture caused grave consternation, which resulted in two choices: 1) change the offending word/picture, or 2) DeafRead would not publish it.

Of course I didn’t change anything for any Editors. What I mean to say is that nobody should have to change for DeafRead or its Editors – Human and Non-Human.

I do not have a whole lot else to say about DeafRead, really. It used to be a good idea and all that stuff but apparently, DeafRead is nothing more than a way for Sprint Relay to make money at the expense of the Deaf Community.

I don’t like corporate sellouts, so I took my blog’s feed off of DeafRead for that reason.

Anyway, on to better things ..

Good times! Great vibrations!

Are all ya’ll ready to begin a whole new way of blogging?! Are all ya’ll wanting to join in with a group of people wanting to promote inclusion, awareness, and tolerance of/for/by people with hearing loss?!

A number of bloggers and myself have banded together and we have toiled day and night to bring you a new web site. It will reflect our goal of enriching the Deaf Community through the sharing of experiences, ideas and thoughts – free from harassing Editors.

We are nearly done building the site, and for the most part, need to wait for the domain to finish propagating through the Internet (which is the main reason for the delay of this announcement). We are excited to bring this to you and hope you will enjoy the opportunity of a whole new and positive blogging experience.

Until the site finishes propagating, the official unveiling of our new site will be postponed. As of right now, it may be tomorrow (Friday) or by Saturday at the latest (we hope), but we will keep you updated.

In the meantime, we would also like to encourage you to leave your blogs’ RSS feeds in the comments here on Paotie’s Green Couch so we can include you in the Grand Opening of the new web site. If not, that’s fine, too – no pressures and no worries.

By the way, I am sorry for making many of you wait so long but I promise it will be worth the wait.

You’ll see ..

Be good .. or be good at it.

:)

Do you accept CI bloggers, Paotie dear? If so, I need to get that RSS feed fixed…mine only has a stupid Atom feed, for some reason :)

“some Editors think too highly of themselves,” and you named the new site after yourself?

Interesting!

Tayler removed the name Sprint and Viable from Deafread and Deaf video.TV. But still the communciation list in the right corner of DR.

I am sure that he will be facing some law troubles.

White Ghost

Hmmmm… while I welcome more variety, I feel that leaving deaf.read will just allow the anti-diversity clique to win the day, we all lose then :( I’ve always thought that the ideal of a ‘community’ is to be inclusive, not exclusive, I’ve tried over years to push that point, been called a troll, had homosexual porn and pictures of deaf people masturbating sent to my blogs, and a lot worse for my troubles, including being stalked from one site to another.

The ability to moderate an aggregate or any site with deaf and HoH in it, is extremely difficult, because of entrenched views, if a site is going to be set up with anti-deaf.read contributors in it, will this help ? We are doing what they do. We stop engaging altogether with the ‘Deaf’ and this makes them martyrs again… Some sadly seem to thrive on paranoia and feel inclusive stuff makes them less important, so will do anything to prevent that happening.

MM

Paotie, FABULOUS news! Let me know if I can assist. Please add my blog, http://www.hearingexchange.com.

I hope you will include me. I am so looking forward to this. By the way I never got my answer to my question to the DR editors.

Wow…

Right now my St. Louis vacation is coming to a close, as we are packing, getting ready for a 4 hour drive back to Indianapolis.

I am shocked at the show of exclusivity by the editors… and disappointed at the name-calling by the commenters (who hide byb annonymous label” who act like immature children bullying on the playground.

I just emailed to Taylor, asking to remove my blog…

Way to go and I am destined to be DBC and NAD’s worst nightmare as I am building ammunition to blast their mission.

My article will be posted on Monday that will shake DBC and NAD with no doubt. Believe me!!!!! And I can’t wait……Smile!!!

MM,

Deafread is like a gigantic stone Citadel that stands right above a little creek. They can believe they’re invincible and behave accordingly; but, we all know this to be true, let the creek run its course long enough…

The very foundations of the indestructible Citadel will soon erode away and collapse on itself.

And long after the fortress is destroyed into unrecognizable pieces, the creek will still be there and running its faithful course…

I guess I’m feeling metaphorical today.

Go Paotie! Go!

Just about blew the coffee out, guffawing, when I came to Mike’s post this morning and saw the Rabid Squirrel picture and that’s when WG’s comment about Chip & Dale hit the phunny bone at the same time.

Like Candy asked, which one of you is Chip and which one is Dale? Ha!

Chip & Dale are gonna get “pinky smacked” silly before the day is over.

You know it, I know it, and so does everyone else. :)

MM, I share your concern, however, I don’t think and I hope not, that the new site would be “anti deafread.” I am hoping (we’re still waiting for the official announcement per Paotie) that the new site (whatever it is called) will be more inclusive and diverse. That is my hope. And, we will soon know more. I have great confidence that Paotie will make sure it will be inclusive and diverse and not a site that is out there to bash other sites.

I’m just as much in the dark as you all and for once, I’d like to be able to have fun blogging and not be drawn into one controversey after another.

CQQL!! Count me in! I like diversity rather than deaf centre website, it bores me.

I can’t wait! I can’t wait!

Can’t wait to see the FEED, whatever that is. I need to be fed.
I hope I am on the distribution list when it goes out. Like KOOL-AID. “KOOL-AID, KOOL-AID, TASTES GREAT! KOOL-AID, KOOL-AID, CAN’T WAIT!” (for the younger set, no it is not a type of band-aid. It is a very confectious ((and sometimes infectious)) hand made drink for summer time fun.) No Kidding! Bwahahahhahhahhahah. just foolin’ with ya. Know what I mean. :-)

I want to join the fun….please include me too.

http://www.bluejeansguy.com/

One ‘anon’ (!) e-mail I got was, who was encouraging another aggregate, “So these Ci people will clear off somewhere else and leave us alone.. we don’t want them here, they are abusive pigs…” Clearly Rachel’s Mom wants Rachel re-instated and an apology in the light of similar responses on deaf.read, which allow this sort of abuse to carry on in various forms, the whole deaf.read site seems to be struggling over ‘inclusion’ doesn’t it ?

My very first blog at deaf.read was written on this issue, because I had been ‘banned’ for raising the same points at one major Brit site, i.e. CI people and other deaf are entitled to put their view as well, the ‘policy’ was CI wearers were the scum of the earth basically, or at least their parents and doctors were for attacking them, “These people have no right to come here..”.

I was surprised personally it took so long to happen. One recent blog, stated “Of course I recognize CI wearers have a right to blog at deaf.read, even if their blogs are pathetic and the blogs pointless, badly written, and silly! ” ouch ! erm not…

MM

MM, because they are complete morons when they talk like that. It is an example of the level of hypocrisy that we see from some of them who have no desire to be a wee bit more open-minded, acceptable and tolerant.

mcconnell

Over Deaf culture’s history, many Deaf kept out the hearing world to keep their language and community, and that is understandable. Unfortunately the same mindset today appears less inclusive for those deaf who use the new hearing technology now available and who speak as well. That mindset regards CI and AVTas another “hearing” intrusion into their corner of the world. This insular mindset hasn’t changed much over the years.

I too was surprised that the CI presence on DR lasted as long as it did, given that some Deaf bloggers/readers were not so welcoming and alarmed that the CI blogs were another form of “hearing” intrusion into their “safe harbor”. I’d hoped that over time there would come some understanding and respect between both sides, but that didn’t turn out to be the case. It takes two to tango, and both sides are just not ready.

Ann_C

What’s problematic is that some people think they have a hold on “diversity” and is a shining example when it’s really not the case.

mcconnell

Diversity seems to be everyone is deaf and cultural, but there are men women and children included.. wow ! I think the ‘non-Deaf’ can enhance the community, such as it exists, if one side shows willing, perhaps the other might ? it is uphill ‘though, since clearly this is the first time we have all been on the same field pitching (The Internet), albeit some are playing in respective corners, their own versions of the game !

Multiculturalism is mostly a dream, an impossible one, and a myth, it’s a nice ideal, shame about the compromises ! since once ‘own spaces’ are recognised, and respected, then they exist and develop APART as seperate entities and continue that way. So if you want unity you have to stay in there, or admit defeat. It’s a long road !

MM

If you look at LaRonda’s latest post, not bad….only if she can get that message across to the rest of the deaf population.

Indians are much more different than deaf culture. We can compare language suppression, but I doubt we can compare cutural because they had their own country, their land and so on wheras we deaf people never had our own land. So, it’s not totally feasable to compare in that regard.

However, it’s interesting that we (most of us) never saw the need for us all to be the same. We pretty much asked for diversity and expect a wide differences among each other but, with respect. Deafread was never like that and that is where I think she failed to see that.

We have been advocating for repecting differences and that does not mean we have to agree or like. The mindset of many is very narrow and shut.

Candy,

Have you read Rob’s comments under Sojourner’s Are You With Us? blog article in DR? Interesting and different view about Native American Indian tribal history.

One thing that is difficult for the Deaf community is accepting the fact that change is in constant flux and coming at a much faster rate than ever before. CI’s today, stem cell-created cochleas next, and even languages evolve. Even the internet as we know it will evolve quickly. The Deaf culture will get left behind and become more embattled or insular, if they don’t bend with the times, or as MM put it, as the reed bends with the wind.

If members of Deaf culture feel threatened NOW by CI’s and AVT, imagine how they’ll react when greater changes come, changes that are just on the horizon and beyond? The upcoming and future generations of deaf children will define the deaf community for themselves, not according to older traditions or culture unfortunately. Many of these future generations will have the benefits of technology at their behest and will want to stay with the times in order to stay in a competitive job market.

Ann_C

I am going to be your aggregator’s frequent visitor!!!!!

Hope this is not a joke. Are you really really going to set one up? I am crossing my fingers that I will not see “I’m just messin’ with all ya’ll. Can ya dig it, ya’know what I’m sayin’?”

Can’t wait as I am sooooo disillusioned with DeafRead.

ASLingly yours,
Anna S

anna s

Yeah, I just saw that. I did see her post a while back but not the comments.

I just do not see how we can compare ourselves with Indians and Blacks in the same vein with deaf. Society does not view deaf people in the same vein as they do with Indians and Blacks. We were not oppressed like they were. We were oppressed in a different way.

Technology does play a big role whether they like it or not. Exactly as you have said regarding changes. We can’t go back and stop technology and it is futile to try to stop technology from advancing.

My ASL signing mom used to tell me that if technology ever advances to a point where deaf people could hear, she would go for it. Why not?! Her belief system is such that when we die and meet our maker, we’d be made whole, thus, she would eventually hear. We were meant to hear in the first place, whether it is now or later. That was her view. And the fact that she is culturally deaf as well, just made it even more intense that she would see it that way.

I don’t want to start another comment party where we’d get into religion and such, so I’ll just stop right now. :)

It’s no joke, anna s, the real McCoy ‘s coming soon, all in good time.

You mean Leonard H. “Bones” McCoy, from the Star Trek?

I didn’t see the link between native americans and deaf either, albeit I respect that view. As that history was not about Native American in-fighting. Whereas the Deaf/deaf do attack each other. They don’t need hearing to oppress them, they do a fair bit themselves to contribute… (I feel a chorus of, I’d like to teach the world to sing, coming on), but I know it would end in tears….:(

MM

Enjoy the journey, dear ones. Blog with full hearts. We must each live our own truths. If we all practice the respect we each desire, then it’s all good.

You have my best.

Hello-

I would love to be a part of such a fantastic, UNIFYING, endeavor :) Hats off to all of you for not just complaining, but taking matters into your own hands.
I ‘think’ this might be my info???: If not, maybe someone more web savvy can help.

Thanks,

By now…Deaf Read’s response (not that I’m waiting for it…) is a little too late. Whatever they may have to say…it’s just not going to have much of an impact anyway.

Loads of congrats to Rachel and the rest of the Deaf Village crew for being proactive. I look forward to reading stimulating dialogs from all walks of life! Maybe one of those days I’ll have my own blog and will post but for now I’ll just sit back and enjoy my reading and drop a line or two here and there.
