Deafhood: Promoting Deaf Boobs

Denver – Good afternoon, everybody! I hope you only came inside to check the Green Couch! You should be outside, enjoying the spring days, meeting new and interesting people. And above all, you should be avoiding those Deafhood perverts – they are now practicing Deaf Porn!

I am not kidding you!

I spent a little time rehashing the bits and pieces I’ve read of Paddy Ladd’s book, “Deafhood” – the guide to being “stupidly deaf” – and immediately regretted it. In fact, my reading of the first three paragraphs of the introduction compelled me to write Mr. Ladd a memo, which I have sent by pigeon-carrier.

Dear Mr. Ladd,

I read your book and please let me tell you – it has added a new level of confounding horror to scholarly research. If Eden were the hallowed halls of academia, you have encouraged masses of ignorant deaf idiots to swarm the air with thick, pea soup-like consistencies of stupidity that drown out all other forms of intelligent life.

Hell would be too kind a respite from the meandering and British blathering that you call a “book” about suicidally pornographic Deafhood priests and priestesses.

Sincerely,

Paotie

HaHa!

I’m just messin’ with all ya’ll. Can ya dig it; ya’know what I’m sayin’?

I had a good laugh this morning in reviewing some of the articles floating through DeafRead. One vlog, in particular, struck me as both funny and odd. And pornographic!

I love Deaf Porn!

A Deafhood wannabe-priestess offered her body earlier this week in an effort to prove her point. She wore a tight shirt and bounced around a lot. She also fidgeted like she was very uncomfortable, and at one point, I was concerned for her well-being because she seemed .. anxious or something.

But when she removed stuffed tissue from her bra to show membership in Deafhood’s, “Itty-Bitty-Titty Club,” I thought, Wow!

So I went to a restaurant and asked a few people what they thought. And since none of the people I talked to knew American Sign Language (ASL), and because the vlog lacked captioning or subtitles, I offered my own licencious and liberal interpretation, instead.

And it went something like this:

Paotie: Wow! What a boob!

Restaurant Eater #1: Wow! What a babe!

Eater #2: What’s wrong with her?

Paotie: I don’t know – meth addict, maybe?

Eater #2: Ha. Ha. That’s not what I meant. I mean, why is she not talking?

Eater #1: Is she deaf?

Paotie: Nope! She is not deaf! She is a “deaf Boob” – the capital letter, “B” signifies that she’s a Deafhood Boob, too.

Eater #2: Really? No way!

Paotie: Yup. Deafhood is all about the tits.

Eater #1: Wow! What a concept! Where do I sign up!?

Meanwhile, at another vlog, the official Deafhood Hand-Job Priestess was seen laying an egg of a comment. In other words, she had this to say about breast and cochlear implants:

I AM AN EXPERT ON MALE MASTURBATION!

HaHa!

Anyway, I have to go now – the BBQ starts in a little while, and I need to make sure the steak and chicken have been marinating properly. In the meantime, have a great and safe Saturday night!

I’ll see all ya’ll tomorrow.

Be good .. or be good at it.

:)

Paotie

*Chuckle* I was ready to believe that you wrote to Paddy, but I knew immediately when I read it that you were kidding. BUT…. why not send him the critique letter and see what he’d say, hmmm? Of course, he’d immediately share the letter with three American Deafhood prophets. I’d be interested in hearing what Paddy would say, since he’d very definitely recognize that you are very rational… like Jeffrey’s letter to AGBell.

Karen Mayes

I read Candy’s post and she is good… very rational. Both of you (Candy and Paotie) are essentially saying “Get life!” ;o)

Sojourner is making sweeping generalizations so I don’t bother responding to her blog. I just enjoy looking at her artwork, nothing more. You could say I am distancing myself from DeafRead nowadays, commenting less and less… like you said, oppressed and depressed people flock to DeafRead. I am guilty of it.. (mostly depression… being laid off from job, moving from New York State where I lived for almost 2 decades, etc.) DeafRead was good while it lasted.

Karen Mayes

*chuckles* *Laughs*

They really, really, really need some help!

Let’s have a call to Dr. Phil!

I googled and found there is a “penile” implant! Interesting.

Will the viagra medicine help the implant?

Just wondering…….oh well.

White Ghost

Ahhh… butt implant, nose implant, arm implant, etc…

Medicine is full of wonders, huh? ;o)

Karen Mayes

Did you know my hair has never looked so good since I had surgery. Wow, if I would have known that CI surgery would improve my hair….NOT

So is all I need is a BI, Eye surgery and lip surgery, tummy tuck, and throw in feet surgery and I will be a deaf barbie with CI!!!! Wow the things I learn on deafread.

valerie

I am super impatient to find out just exactly what the boob said in her vlog. I don’t want to jump to conclusion and all but could anyone give me an idea of what exactly it is that she said?

I thought it was funny how this individual went into the risks.

We all know there’s risk for ALL surgeries, boob job or not.

It’s not about risks. It’s about WHY do we bother to get surgeries.

It’s about the “Reason” for it.

And that is what I tried to point out but, you can’t reason people sometimes…

The Deaf boobs are tiptoeing around WHY a deaf person decides to have a CI or a hearing parent decides a CI for his deaf child by using negative scare tactics. They’re pointing to the “dangers” or risks of CI surgery now.

Patients are informed about the fact that any surgery has its risks. Many patients go ahead and opt for surgery because they want a certain OUTCOME, be it figure enhancement , a sensorial aid, or a better quality of life, and are willing to take the risks to gain that outcome. People are not risk-takers for nothing.

Ann_C

Risk-takers, yes, the implants and the transplants are the same as risks that any of us or you decide for the best in life.

How about the babies who receive the heart transplants? They’re young as the CI babies to receive the health welfares.

That’s the parents’ job to rake some risks.

The b/vloggers could be either forgot to discuss the babies to receive some transplants. They could be the bloopers as well.

White Ghost

WG, you’ve got a good point there about parents who have to make those gut-wrenching decisions about a transplant for their child. A transplant is often the last resort after all other treatments fail. But a transplant can be a life-saving action and give the child a quality of life he/she didn’t have before the procedure.

Funny how some v/bloggers are so focused on the dangers or “risks” of a CI procedure at the expense of a more compelling reason, outcome.

Ann_C

Hmmm. Interesting, very interesting. Give me another five years and you’ll see quite a rack on this Mamma. kiss kiss, Jodi

jodi

I tell you what Ann C, they are quite covert about how they do it as well ! They will trawl online to find ANYTHING that ‘Might’ suggest an issue, or, give them something to focus negativity on. there is a lot of duplicity around ! There wa WW£ in the UK over a blog posted on DR where not one single blog coveringthe CI had anything positive to say, when taken to task, they said we just re-print what others say. (Then add the this is cruel, undermines deaf culture to it all !).

The general view is parents are too thick to understand deafness is fun and great, and Dr’s want to tiurn everyone intohearing people who are the dregs of the planet apprently….. so leave it alone, and stop the child abuse (That’s some of the moderate stuff you can read), or stuff like “How cruel these parents are to attack our deaf children (OUR ?), and drill holes in their heads, how will they be able to swim with the holes in their head ?” I kid you not…..

MM,

Don’t forget there are also a few in the CI community who have a dim view of deafness, that it is “not normal”, that “I wouldn’t want my CI child to associate with these crazy, angry, signing, (stick-a-label here) Deaf”, and that signing interferes with AVT (like how many hours are in a day here?)and the child’s education (ok, monolingual it is then), and a plethora of other nutsy stuff.

Hard to strike a rational balance, hey?

Ann_C

Hmmm… that is one problem with education. There are many approaches and many people agree or disagree, backing up with evidences and experiences… personal and professional. That is why I just say the parental involvement is essential and that we need to take a look at the “whole” child… deaf and hearing. If I say ASL is not always the answer, I’d be labeled as angry, bigot, etc. If I say ASL is the only way, I’d be looked on with approval.

*shrug*

Karen Mayes

And… often the child’s needs change as the child gets older, so the circumstances change, etc. The “wholeness” also involves the expected changes.

Karen Mayes

*Whistle*

Argh! Pffft!

Take a visit to Cy’s Deaf Tea Time, “CI/ASL & Culturally Deaf “Divided” By Values, Not By Labels” as of yesterday, 5 May 08.

I strongly disagree with her views 100 percent. Being a labeled person does not mean anything. Some of the CI-ASL users consider themselves a culturally deaf person. In a way, they were raised by deaf family and relatives.

I am sure that Cy forgot to discuss about the CI-ASL users who came from Deaf family and relatives.

Discussing about the values at Cy’s blog does not help anything, either.

Hey, Candy! Any thoughts?

White Ghost

Yeah, I saw that. I thought it was a good blog, attempting to explain the values… which is something that deaf people don’t understand. But then hearing people don’t understand either ;o) We all have our own definition of values, which can easily rub off other people in wrong way. Same goes for a sense of humor… there are all kinds of humor.

Karen Mayes

Well, what people value as in “cherish” varies among individuals. Apparently she was accused of labeling people in the first place which prompted her to do this vlog.

But, like i said, it varies. You will have ASL/CI that values deaf culture over their own family and vice versa. Same thing with ASL person. Most of us value the relationship we have with our parents and relatives, or whomever it is we care about in our life, and we approach it and make decisions in our lives in many areas based on the value, whichever way we see fit. Likewise, CY should be open and understanding when hearing parents who value close relationship with their deaf child and sees C.I. as a way to keep the parent/child relationship flourishing. To each its own. I think Cy is just covering her butt. But, is it a justification for deafside? I don’t think so. it’s like saying ok, you cherish this, therefore, you belong “there” and because we cherish “this” we belong “here.” It is still dividing and to me, it is not diversity. It all still comes down to inclusion and/or discrimination. JMO.

Candy, do you mean “exclusion” rather? Confused English, maybe? Sorry, if I misconstrued the word.

Too quiet here…only Tuesday, I know.

Ann_C

Ha, yeah Ann C I knew I didn’t type something right. :)

yeah quiet day….
