Deafhood: Hypocrite Religion

Denver – Good afternoon, everybody! How are all ya’ll today? Yesterday was a beautiful day – people were outside, trees seemed to bloom and the Squirrels that Run Up the Tree held a keg party outside my house all afternoon. And then today, it snowed like a December blizzard – do you realize what this means?

It means that whenever the wind changes directions, so does a DeafRead editor’s explanation for DeafSide.

HaHa!

Anyway .. so yah, I’ve seen some of the comments floating around DeafRead about “two bloggers” being the singular cause of DeafSide’s initial creation. Strange – the last time I checked, DeafSide was created to provide “safe harbor” for some unknown number of “depressed” deaf people loitering in a darkened alley behind Wal-Mart.

Weirdly enough, another Deafhood supporter had this to say after ranting and raving angrily towards a deaf b/vlogger: “Are you happy? If not, shut up!”

NEXT!

And then another Deafhood supporter compared different types of deaf people as if they were beef. She suggested – and I am not kidding you here – that she was a hot dog, and that everyone else not like her was Prime Steak.

Mashed potatoes, anyone!?

NEXT!

And then there was another Deafhood woman – a teacher, no less – who actually practices Deafhood by ejecting other deaf people out of “deaf culture.” In fact, she even said, “You like to hear. My mother did, too. STRIIiiiiiiiiiike ONE! YOOUuuRRRE outtaa DEAF CULTURE!”

NEXT!

Strangely enough, the victim of the Deafhood Umpire’s rejection had this to say after it was pointed out that her continued support of DeafSide would result in more people being rejected like her: “I felt the sting and still do. It’s no good to dwell on it, is it?

NEXT!

The same Deafhood person would also state that the issue for DeafSide was all about “feelings,” as in “depressed deaf people’s feelings because they are inundated with CI messages on DeafRead.” Not long after her unceremonious eviction from Deaf Culture, she was back at a Deafhood/DeafRead editor’s blog, equating CIs with AG Bell Foundation because the best way solidify your status on DeafSide is to simply reject cochlear implants – even if you have one!

NEXT!

Morbidly enough, the same Deafhood supporter remains clueless as to why so many deaf people on DeafRead are “depressed” about CI-related articles. Little research reveals that the majority of articles by a popular Deafhood/DeafRead editor are negative in focus, and this apparent and obvious concept floated between one ear, bumped into an electrode, and then was zapped useless by the Deafhood supporter’s CI processor.

NEXT!

A popular Deaf Bully Club (aka DBC) has been busy encouraging deaf people to masturbate to DBC videos about ASL – and I am not kidding you again – because to do otherwise is grounds for the Deafhood Umpire to toss your ass out of “Deaf Culture.” In fact, there is a reason why the DBC’s videos are not subtitled, but I won’t go there.

NEXT!

Well, I don’t know. What I do know is the simplest solution to Deafhood’s ever-constant suffering from oppression can be found by the wise words of one of their own members:

It’s no good to dwell on it, is it?

I didn’t make this up – they did this all by themselves.

Hey Paotie!

Sup with all the NEXT!?

Great post! hilarious! very revealing of true nature of the deaf culture!!

You nailed it this time. :)

Deaf Bully Club= DBC, lol. Wasn’t it J.Egbert who once called you a bully? I guess the joke’s on Deafhood.

Deafhood talks about oppression, ah, it’s called colonialization according to Paddy Ladd. “It’s no good to dwell on it” (oppression, that is) but Deafhood proponents sure point fingers at those with differing views, saying ” you need to be colonialized, or re-colonialised, or de-colonised!” Whichever it is. No, I don’t need a decolonising, thank you.

Ann_C

Ann ..

The important thing about Deafhood is that it builds colonies of colons that have been derived from semicolons plucked from colonial cockle roosters.

Sorry! I couldn’t resist.

Yah, Mr. Egbert called me plenty of names. So did Oral I. Tust.

HaHa!
:)

Paotie

You know what colons are full of right? :)

Ah, yes, the semicolons in Paddy Ladd’s dry tome, heh. Colonial cockle roosters= Deafhood proponents, ah, yes. Oh, golly, don’t get me started now, LOL.

The name-calling between J. Egbert and Oral I. Tust, now that means you fall somewhere in the middle, tough spot to be betwixt.

Ann_C

Yah, Abbie, BS.

Ann_C

There is no shortage of full colons on Deafread, deafside, deafwho, or what ever the heck it is called today LOL :)

Ahhhh….

I was out yesterday, playing a mom and talking with other moms while kids practiced baseball on one of the diamonds. It was a beautiful day yesterday but miserable for some people with pollen allergies (flowering trees… ahhhhh… nope, I dont have allergies and some people… especially who moved to Indiana from other states which had few trees, such as South Dakota.)

I was thinking… what an irony that after Taylor accounced the pregnancy with DeafSide (I wonder who is father of DeafSide? DeafRead is mom, yup. So I guess DBC is the father? ;o) ) soon to be born on May 12th, the deaf vloggers came back… then we don’t really need DeafSide after all???

Oppression… depression… what other prefixes comes with “pression”… which means pressure… peer pressure.

As a Brit I feel a little guilty as the instigator of the culture of deafhood was written by a fellow Brit, however, British deaf don’t pay any attention to it, it is the Americans who seem to have adopted the confused ramblings of Mr Ladd with Gusto, perhaps the American psyche is attuned to ‘cults’ and freaky Friday outpourings, and we Brits are too snobby about such things to acknowledge it, who knows !

It seems to be replacing the Bible as the most read book by ‘Deaf’ these days… I doubt Deaf can really wade through the first 16 pages without wanting to go away to a quiet room and lie down somewhere. It is total inference from beginning to end, and of course like all similar publications just raises questions not answers, so you never have any real idea of where your ‘Journey’ is going, or even if you want to make such a Journey, and as no suggestions come forward to attain high priesthood (Or priestess whatever !), status in deafology, you can’t question it either.

There are no questiosn to ask, because there are no answers to seek.. DEEEEEEEP ! not. We are DEAF, now get over it and try for goodness sake to move on. I’m wondering with the American perchance to make a quick ‘buck’ if they have logged in to something to make money ? Do ‘Deafhood’ lessons come cheap ? will there be classes, books ? ‘baptisms’ into deaf culture taking place ? fancy painted deafhood buses to take you there, hell, we Brits have ALL the good ideas, but you take the cash lolol……..

Hahahaha… MM… I liked your comment.

“Baptisms” into deaf culture… that is far-out.

Fancy painted deafhood buses…

Etc.

You know, Christianity would not be alive today if there was no Paul. It was Paul and his “disciples” who made it possible. So I guess Deafhood would not be possible without three Americans, huh?

*shrug* I don’t think about deafhood. I am just being myself, enjoying the daily routines.

Karen Mayes

St Paddy Ladd, erm…. doesn’t have the same ring to it… :) Nor St Elmer of Ohio come to think of it…. lol

What about the Last Supper, MM?

Welcome to the hilarious club, MM.

It was funny.

Hey! Friday madness eh?

I’m really impressed to see someone from England saying shit about Paddy’s book. It’s about time.

So, thank you MM for confirming that most deaf people who worship Deafhood are nothing but cultist.

Well, have a great freaky Friday!
;)

I’m from WALES not England

The ‘Deaf’ hate me here too :)

Noswaith da :)

Ah ok so, are you still considered British?

MM, as I understand it, there have been Deafhood seminars conducted in various parts of the country for some time now.

Apparently Paddy Ladd’s book is hard for some deaf people to read (yes, it is a dry and rather academic read) much less understand, so there are several educated deaf people who have taken it upon themselves to spread the deaf journey gospel.

The problem with the seminars is that these are taught by a few cultural Deaf ASL-users who attempt to further their ASL-only agenda in what seems like a subtle form of politicizing Deaf culture exclusivity.

The seminar presenters don’t represent the spectrum of deafness, as it should be, hence the skepticism that some deaf here in the States have towards the Deafhood concept (note the bid D). One sees the same presenters at the various Deafhood seminars around the country.

Furthermore, some of the presenters have their fingers in several pies, namely DBC, CAD (Calif.) and other ASL organizations, so their influence in the deaf community is considerable and definitely NOT neutral or inclusive of other deaf, who may or may not use ASL.

As for the book itself, it doesn’t provide or suggest a means of dealing with oppression, of setting goals in the journey, and it’s mostly a philosophy of what “to be”. All the books about deafness have been so far been about deaf history, deaf experiences, deaf education, sign language and its history, Deaf culture, Deaf clubs, etc. but Ladd has come up with a deaf “philosophy”, a first. I think that unique first deaf philosophy is the reason why so many deaf people are suddenly treating it like gospel.

It is in this decade that one now sees so many deaf people who have college degrees, some master’s and PhD’s as well, in the States and there is a thirst for intellectual stimulation. It may well be the beginnings of a deaf Renaissance, but one would do well to approach it with a healthy dose of critical thinking before getting swept up in the “trends” of the day.

Ann_C

*nod* at Ann_C’s comment.

It reminds me kind of Al Qaeda approach… to “depressed” young men.

No offense.

Karen Mayes

Or “oppressed”.

So the depression/oppression does really play a factor in people taking interest in religions/movements, all right.

Karen Mayes

“influence in deaf culture is considerable” Don’t be too sure. I’ve spoken with regular deaf people and many are bewildered with that concept. Let’s hope they don’t get snatched up by these voodoo priests.

I see what you mean, Karen, when a religion comes along promising salvation and redemption that it can appeal to those who are “oppressed” and “depressed”. Hence, the appeal of Paddy Ladd’s “first” deaf philosophy.

However, it seems to me these few Deafhood presenters have seized upon Ladd’s book as an opportunity to put a modern gloss on what is basically old Deaf culture and further the cause of ASL use and Deaf culture. That is not deaf Renaissance in any shape or form. It’s still exclusivity, no matter what the label, Deafhood, whatever. It’s not a genuine reaching out to and including all deaf, so the priesthood’s agenda is more like a political winnowing process of “Who’s with us?” and attacking those who don’t toe the line.

One sees Deafhood terminology and so many catch-all phrases sprinkled throughout a number of DR blogs, that any reader new to DR would be able to pick out the Deafhood propaganda if he sticks around long enough. As we all know, Paotie has a field day with the propaganda!

Ann_C

Ho-ly Sheeeeeit. You are hot when you get crusadin’! Jodi

jodi

Candy –

Yes, you got it right!

Over million people have no idea about the concept…..they are bewildered.

That’s true.

White Ghost

Yep I am still British :) Welsh people fought at the Alamo you know and signed your declaration of independance (Yep we opposed the English too lol)……

Y’know, I have been reading some deafhood responses here, and still can’t tell if it is a religion, or a recipe for blueberry flan… When will the first ‘Church’ be built to worship this new religion I wonder ? will we have to cut our ears off, do a Van Gogh ? Wear ‘Paddy Ladd is GOD’ T-shirts you think ? Let’s not leave it there…

“Wave, if you’re Deaf and Horny” lol….
“My other ear HASN’T a CI.”,
“Sign, deafie on board..” car stickers…
“Deaf do it with their hands..”
“On the 7th day, god created the deaf..”

There is no end to it is there…. :) Unfortunately… :(

Paotie,
You are so good! Always enjoy reading your truthful blogs. am looking forward to reading more.
Bully Deaf Club will fall gradually everyday for being liars,
too bad.
