UFC 78 Results: Evans Wins, Alexander KO’d, Fisher Beaten
Colorado Springs – Last night, UFC 78 featured Rashad Evans scoring a split decision in his light heavyweight fight against British fighter, Michael Bisping. Houston Alexander, who won his past two UFC fights by stunning knockouts, lost a brutal first round TKO to Thiago Silva in another light heavyweight fight. And perennial lightweight contender, Spencer Fisher, suffered a unanimous decision loss to Frankie Edgar.
For Evans, the win marked a bit of a comeback since his last fight, which ended in a draw with Tito Ortiz. Evans controlled Bisping for much of the first two rounds, with Bisping mounting short-lived comeback attempts. The fight was closer than the split decision would indicate as both agreed that the outcome could have gone either way.
The loss to Evans was Bisping’s first in the UFC. Evans remains unbeaten.
Light heavyweight and UFC newcomer, Houston Alexander – whom had won his previous two fights by scoring first-round knockouts – suffered an early, first-round exit of his own. At the 3:25 mark of the first round, Alexander succumbed to waves of Thiago Silva’s punishing ground game. Early during the fight, Alexander wrestled Silva to the ground before the Brazilian reversed and in turn, put Alexander onto the mat. Unable to escape Silva’s mastery of the ground game, Alexander took punishment from Silva before the referee called a stop to the fight.
One-time upcoming and future UFC lightweight star, Spencer Fisher was manhandled last night by undefeated Frankie Edgar in suffering an unanimous decision defeat. Edgar controlled Spencer for the majority of the fight, and Spencer was unable to out-wrestle Edgar’s superior ground game.
In other action: Welterweight superstar, Karo Parisyan won a lackluster unanimous decision against Ryo Chonan – a former Pride fighter making his UFC debut.
Former TUF and current UFC welterweight fighter, Chris Lytle lost his fight to Thiago Alves due to a cuts stoppage.
Another TUF fighter, Ed Herman, scored a third-round knockout of Joe Doerksen.

Paotie’s PostScript: JR Houck of Hacnews.com has published two interviews – one with reigning EliteXC lightweight champion, KJ Noons, who recently scored a win against Nick Diaz, and another with MMA legend, Bas Rutten.
As usual, Houck’s interviewing skills gives readers a chance to see the mindset of KJ Noons after his stunning win over the always-game and dangerous Diaz.
Noons discusses the fight with Diaz, as well as future plans to continue his boxing career in hopes of being the first man to hold titles in both boxing and MMA. For more on the KJ Noons interview, click this link.
Houck also landed an interview with MMA giant, Bas Rutten. Rutten discusses who he thinks would win a Randy Couture vs Fedor Emelyanenko match-up. He also discusses legendary MMA fighter Frank Shamrock’s departure from the International Fighting League (IFL), as well as the state of EliteXC’s class of fighters.
Houck addresses the fact Rutten also trains YouTube street fighting phenom, Kimbo Slice. During the interview, Rutten painted Slice to be an upstanding and humble person, which is a sharp contrast to the public perception of Slice as a street thug. Rutten also explained in the interview that he both supports and admires Kimbo Slice’s aspiration to join the elite ranks of the MMA world.
Also, another Hacnews.com writer, Luiz Cruz, wrote an interesting interview with upcoming light heavyweight superstar, Thierry Sokoudjou.
If you’re a boxing purist, you can still find excellent articles and interviews regarding the latest boxing news, gossip and potential match-ups at Hacnews.com, such as the recent Cotto vs Mosely fight.
Have a great Sunday.

Correction: it was bisping’s second loss. We all know matt hamill whipped bisping and we all knew bisping would lose last night’s match. Give hamill his due to an big time ppv fight and we all know hamill will kick and pound his next opponent’s head off.
Absolutely!
I agree!
Paotie
Heh. True. Hamill schooled Bis-ding-a-ling that night.
I’m still stunned over Houston’s loss.
Stacy ..
Well, if the UFC has proven anything, it’s that anyone can win any given fight. Matt Serra once said that it wasn’t about the best puncher or the best kicker, or the best wrestler. It was about being persistent and strong in believing in yourself that you have a chance.
All you need is a chance. Only takes one punch to change a fight.
Most of the champs have all come back from losses, so maybe Alexander will come back better.
Hamill vs Evans – who wins?
Paotie
Hammill
Ohhh man ..
I met Evans in Albuquerque while he trained for a fight. I spoke with him for a few minutes and came away with the impression that Rashad is one of the nicest, most humble people I’ve ever met.
And Hamill .. I like that he represents that people with hearing loss CAN kick ass. I once got into a fight with a man, and after he was knocked out (and myself pulled off of him), he became enraged after someone told him he’d gotten his ass whooped by a “handicapped boy.” Round Two went the same way as the first but with lots more of his blood everywhere.
I’m not gonna pick. I just want a good, clean fight. Hell, rematches would be a great thing if the fights are close enough.
